Paradigms Lost
by John L. Casti, copyright 1990.
Avon Books, New York. Paperback, 565 pages.

John Casti is one of our favorite
writers. In Paradigms Lost, he addresses seven "claims" such as digital
computers can think, there is life on other planets, and objective reality does not exist
(independent of the observer). He does this in the forum of a trial, arguing both sides of
the case. Our particular interest and focus was on Chapter 3 "It's in the
Genes." In this chapter, Casti argues the pro and con of the claim that human
behavior patterns are dictated primarily by the genes. Always readable and always
thoughtful, Casti's Paradigms Lost is worth your time. |
